Friday Harbor’s 2018 track team has a new coach and a new focus. Shannon Plummer, who has been a part of the Friday Harbor football program for 22 years, has taken on the position of track head coach. He is assisted by James Sane, more commonly known as Lumpy, who is a record-holding long-distance runner from his track career in the 1970s. Along with Plummer, who was a pole vaulter and hurdler himself, the two bring experience and knowledge to the team who started season practice on Feb. 26.

The team is made up of 20 students, including Ryan Schaefer who hails from Lopez Island and will contribute his discus skills to the Wolverines. Plummer is optimistic that this year’s team is capable of breaking school records.

“They have all achieved and excelled my expectations,” he says.

His goal for this season is for everyone to better their individual time by two seconds.

They will prepare for their first meet by competing against themselves, in a practice meet at home. The team is ready to kick off the 2018 season at their first meet in LaConner. See full schedule below.
