The Friday Harbor Wolverines won the Island Cup 21-14 in overtime Saturday at Orcas.

Junior tailback Roy Taylor scored the winning touchdown on a pitch and sweep. The Wolverines then held the Orcas Vikings at bay on the Vikings’ possession to end the game.

Tanner Buck was quarterback for the Wolverines the entire game.

About 200 Friday Harbor fans attended the game, played under cloudy skies at windswept Dahl Field.

In the first quarter, Taylor took a hand-off on a 9-yard touchdown run to put the Wolverines on the scoreboard. Tight end Michael Ausilio scored in the second quarter and the Wolverines led 14-7 at the half.

Taylor took a hand-off and scampered 12 yards for what proved to be the game-winning touchdown in the Wolverines’ 21-14 win in overtime; the Vikings failed to score on their next possession.

Just before the end of the second quarter, lineman Dalton Baker was knocked unconscious; Airlift Northwest flew him out.

Journal reporter Scott Rasmussen covered the game; his car and four others were on overload and had to wait for a later ferry to return to Friday Harbor.

A complete report and photos will be posted later and will be published in Wednesday’s Journal of the San Juan Islands.
