What’s up with kids after school?

“Lights on After school” was created to raise awareness of the importance of affordable, quality after-school care.

Island Rec’s after-school STAR program will join the nationwide “Lights on After school” event, Thursday, Oct. 17.

Children and parents who have not participated in the Study Time and Afternoon Recreation (STAR) program are invited to join in the many activities at the Elementary School gym, 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.

The After School Alliance founded the Lights On project 13 years ago to raise awareness of the importance of affordable, quality after-school care. More than 26 percent of school-aged children  nationwide are on their own after the end of school, according to the Alliance.

The STAR program, open every school day until 6 p.m., features games, arts and crafts, quiet homework time and snacks. Early release days include field trips or special guests. Scholarships are available.
