Volunteer Companions Needed for Hospice Patients

Now Recruiting for Fall Training Session

Hospice of the Northwest seeks compassionate, community-minded individuals to provide support and companionship to the dying and those who love them. Volunteers bring in the outside world to those who are homebound or live in local facilities. They serve as friendly visitors and provide respite for families and caregivers. Volunteers are needed throughout Skagit, Island, San Juan and Snohomish counties. They complete an 18-hour orientation before being matched with a patient. The next training will be held on three consecutive Fridays: September 23, September 30 and October 7. Sessions will take place from 9am – 4pm at Hospice of the Northwest, 227 Freeway Drive, Suite A in Mount Vernon. Attendance at all three sessions is required.

Volunteers read aloud, listen to stories, play cards, watch movies, share hobbies, do puzzles, and record memories. They may also help with household tasks. Volunteers find that giving the gift of themselves is truly rewarding and makes a difference in the lives of those they serve.

Hospice volunteers and patients are matched by location, interests and skills. Visits take place an average of 1-2 hours/week at a mutually convenient time. Respite visits may last up to four hours. Trainings are offered just twice yearly and fill up quickly. Because it takes several weeks for volunteers to complete background and health checks prior to training, those who are interested in the fall session should contact Julie Pryor Barr, Volunteer Supervisor, 360.814.5588 or jbarr@hospicenw.org for an application as soon as possible. Volunteers interested in other types of opportunities with Hospice, including office and community work, are also encouraged to call. Positions are available to suit abilities, interests and schedules.
