The newly formed Islanders For Children has organized two demonstrations to be held on Tuesday to coincide with a visit to San Juan Island by the assistant secretary of the Department of Corrections.

The demonstration will take place at 11 a.m., and at 2 p.m., on the lawn outside the County Courthouse in Friday Harbor. 

Supporters are encouraged to wear red. 

The demonstrations, according to IFC, are intended to send a clear message to the Department of Corrections that the San Juans are not an appropriate location to place a Level 3 sex offender. 

Corrections is considering allowing David Franklin Stewart, a Level 3 sex offender convicted in 2003 of first-degree child rape, to reside on San Juan Island. Stewart, who was convicted in Snohomish County, and where he currently resides in a halfway house, and his wife purchased a home in the Roche Harbor area in 2004. 

Also Tuesday, the San Juan County Sheriff’s Department will be host two “informational” meetings regarding Stewart’s possible move to the island. The first meeting will take place at the Pavilion at Roche Harbor Resort beginning at 4 p.m. The second meeting gets underway at 5 p.m at the Mullis Community Senior Center in Friday Harbor.
