Turnovers prove costly in Wolverines’ 74-50 loss to Lynden Christian | Boys Basketball

Friday Harbor fell behind by double-digits in the opening half and played catch up the rest of the way in a 74-50 loss to the Lyncs, Saturday, in Turnbull Gym.

Outsized in the paint and in the post, the Wolverines were bound to come up short on the boards against Lynden Christian and its twin towers.

So those 26 turnovers proved even that much more costly.

Friday Harbor fell behind by double-digits in the opening half and played catch up the rest of the way in a 74-50 loss to the Lyncs, Saturday, in Turnbull Gym.

“I think it could’ve been a lot closer game without so many turnovers,” senior Tanner Buck said.

Trailing 38-24 at the half, the Wolverines matched the Lyncs point-for-point after the break but were unable to trim the deficit down below 10 in the final two periods of play.

Friday Harbor senior Preston Ukra, who drained three 3-point shots, tallied a team-high 16 points. Senior Roy Taylor, who knocked down three of his own from beyond the 3-point arc, had 12 points, and sophomore Donny Galt added 10.

Lynden Christian (9-4) grabbed an early lead as senior Joey Spoelstra and sophomore Issac Reimer, both listed at 6′ 6″, dominated the paint on both ends of the court and combined for 24 of the Lyncs’ 38 first-half points. Reimer, who tallied 18 for the game, and Spoelstra, with 15, together had 33 points.

With the loss, the Wolverines fell to 6-6 overall, but remain undefeated in Northwest 1A/2B League play, at 6-0.

On Tuesday, the league lead will be on the line when the Wolverines travel to La Conner for a showdown against the Braves, who, at 6-0, are locked in a two-way tie at the top of the league standings with Friday Harbor. Tip off is 6 p.m.

Buck said the Wolverines will have added incentive in Tuesday’s match up. With a win, Friday Harbor would take first place in the league standings and avenge its only two league losses of a year ago.

“If we could go to La Conner and beat them, that would be the best thing,” Buck said.
