San Juan County Sheriff’s Department reported responding to these calls:

March 30: Orcas school officials opted for handing out discipline on their own rather than to pursue criminal charge following the arrest of a student for trespassing after-hours at the school. The 18-year-old boy was taken into around midnight after he and three friends climbed onto the roof and slipped inside the building to reportedly play a prank on a science teacher. The others fled the scene.

March 31: A jewelry collection valued at $5,000 disappeared from a Lopez Island home in an apparent theft. The home owner, a 66-year-old woman, noted the jewelry went missing at the same time that a home-improvement project was underway at her Schreider Road home.

— Two bank bags containing a total of $600 cash and various credit card receipts vanished from a Friday Harbor restaurant in an apparent after-hours theft. The bags were reportedly inside a the business office of Homesteaders restaurant at the time they disappeared.

April 1: An Orcas Island woman’s bank account was drained of nearly $5,000 through the illicit use of her debit card numbers in an apparent case of theft and fraud. The thief reportedly ran up $4,912 in charges, which included gas and food, at several business in the Tacoma and Puyallup area.

— A San Juan Island woman was then arrested for driving with a revoked license following an early evening traffic stop near the intersection of Second and Spring streets. The 46-year-old, who was pulled over for not wearing a seat belt, was released with a criminal citation and ticket for the traffic infraction.

April 5: An ornamental shrub disappeared from outside an Orcas Island liquor store in an apparent copy-cat theft at the same location. The shrub that most recently disappeared, 1-foot tall and 1-foot wide, was planted as a replacement for another that vanished in an earlier theft. Security cameras at the Prune Alley liquor store are reportedly being realigned.

April 7: An Orcas Island man who made a half-dozen late night 9-1-1 calls in which he was reportedly belligerent, offensive and not in need of help was given a pass for the transgression on the heels of a belated apology. The 60-year-old, who was intoxicated at the time, was initially argumentative when a deputy arrived at his Cayou Valley Road home to investigate, and then later apologized. A military veteran, the man is reportedly haunted by memories of being in combat.

April 8: A San Juan Island woman who reportedly prevented an elderly woman from making a 9-1-1 call was arrested for misdemeanor vandalism and for interrupting the call. The 45-year-old was taken into custody at the 70-year-old’s Douglas Road home shortly after the call was interrupted. The two reportedly were arguing over substance abuse by the younger moments before the phone line went dead.

April 9: An Orcas Island man wanted in connection with a felony case turned himself in and was later released after a friend posted $500 bail. The 48-year-old promised to appear in court six days his release.

— A Mount Vernon man faces possible charges of hit-and-run and making false statements following a late night single-car collision near Roche Harbor Resort, the aftermath of which he and four others reportedly fled. The 24-year-old was one of two occupants who were found hiding in the brush nearby and denied being behind the wheel of the Lexus that went of the road near the intersection of Afterglow Drive and Roche Harbor Road and crashed shortly before 1 a.m. Accompanied by the owner of the car, he admitted at the Sheriff’s office the following day that he had been driving at the time of the crash.

April 10: Someone with an apparent grudge vandalized a San Juan Island woman’s Volvo sedan after dark while it was parked outside her Jensen Alley home. The car’s windshield wipers, radio antenna and driver’s side mirror were ripped off the vehicle; the wipers were found among some nearby bushes.

April 13: A Lopez Island woman who took matters into her own in expelling a female acquaintance from her home insisted on notifying authorities about the noontime altercation even though she was the alleged aggressor. The 51-year-old reportedly was advised about less combative ways of resolving future confrontation and that reporting the incident could result in a charge of assault filed against her. The alleged victim, a 47-year-old, reportedly opted to forego having authorities involved.

April 14: A San Juan Island man ended up on the receiving end of two profanity-laced tirades after asking that his name be taken off a telemarketing company’s call list. The 64-year-old reportedly was subjected to a verbal attack by a man making calls on the company’s behalf, who, after being hung up on, called the man back to spout off so more. Authorities reportedly are unable to investigate without the company’s name.

— A San Juan Island woman was arrested for driving with a suspended license following a late night traffic stop near the intersection of Roche Harbor and West Valley roads. The 30-year-old, who was pulled over for speeding at about 10 p.m., was ticketed for the traffic violation and allowed to leave the scene with her passenger behind the wheel.

April 16: A familiar face and tainted driving record led to the arrest of a San Juan Island man for driving with a suspended license as he drove off a ferry in Friday Harbor. The 50-year-old was reportedly behind the wheel of a sedan and recognized by a recognized by a deputy as the boat approach the ferry landing. He was taken into custody shortly after 9 p.m.

April 20: A San Juan Island man could face charges of interfering with a federal officer following a mid-morning arrest at American Camp. The 61-year-old was taken into custody following a dispute with Natioinal Parks ranger near the American Camp Redoubt shortly before 11 a.m. The man reportedly interfered with the agency’s functions and became belligerent during a heated exchange with the ranger.

April 21: A runaway Pontiac clipped a power pole, crossed two lanes of traffic, busted through a fence and then slammed into a power transformer, where it came to a stop, following an unmanned descent down a steep driveway in the 500 block of Orcas Island’s Point Lawrence Road. The person living nearest the transformer switched off the sedan’s engine, which was still running. The car began rolling even though its owner, a 40-year-old woman who got out of the vehicle after starting it up, had reportedly put the transmission in park.
