Scientists, historians and other technical experts discuss the preservation and potential restoration of the American Camp prairie during The Island Prairie Symposium, Wednesday, Sept. 21, 8 a.m. – 3 p.m. at the Mullis Center.

“This meeting personifies a brand-new start for us and the community in terms of prairie restoration and other natural resource management projects,” said Jerald Weaver, park chief of integrated resources and acting superintendent. “That means we have an open slate in restoration method, or even if restoration is feasible in some areas. Moreover, the process will reflect transparency throughout.”

Presentations will be followed by panel discussions on the following topics: prairie ecology, non-native invasive species, threatened and endangered species, historical perspectives on modifications from settlement to cultural landscape and fire management.

The history segment will include Boyd Pratt’s exploration of the Hudson’s Bay Company established European farming practices in the wake of semi-cultivation by American Indians and 93-year-old Al Sundstrom’s review of farming.

Following discussions will examine prairie restoration practices in other areas of the state and region and review national park preservation practices.
