The secrets of “Organic No-Till” agricultural production will be unveiled and in the spotlight in a pair of weekend workshops at San Juan Island’s Talking Horse Farm, Aug. 11-12.

The weekend kicks off with a two-day workshop entitled “Natural Farming”, in which participants will learn practical, hands-on techniques in the no-till method of agricultural production, inspired by the philosophy of Masanobu Fukouka. The workshop is led by Larry Korn, editor of “One Straw Revolution”, with Ryan Drum, Ana Malinoff, Krista Rome and Smith & Merchantile.

Fee for the workshop is $125; $75 for farmworkers and students.

On Sunday, the husband and wife team of Talking Horse Farm, 652 Halvorsen Road, Gary Miller and Amy Plant, will lead a free Field Day and tour of no-till test beds, which feature salad greens. The three-hour Field Day, beginning at 9 a.m., includes hands-on workshops and presentations by Korn and WSU’s Andy Barr.

The workshops are part of the public education portion of a two-year “experiment” funded by Sustainable Agriculture Research & Education, a nationwide organization fostering sustainable agriculture.
