Submit ideas to reduce natural hazards’ risk and damage

Submitted by the Department of Emergency Management

The San Juan County and Friday Harbor Department of Emergency Management is developing a natural hazard mitigation plan. DEM is seeking input from the community about ways to reduce the risk of injuries and damage from natural hazards. One example of a mitigation activity is a project to reduce the threat of wildland fires to neighborhoods. Learn more by attending one of the following meetings:

• Shaw Island: Saturday, May 13, 4:30 to 6 p.m. at the community building

• San Juan: Sunday, May 21, noon to 1:30 p.m. at the Skagit Valley College Community Room

• Lopez: Sunday, May 21, 4 to 5:30 p.m. at the Lopez Library meeting room.

• Orcas: Tuesday, May 23, 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the senior center

In March, DEM kicked off the planning effort by releasing a survey about natural hazards and preparedness. It’s available at https://goo.gl/forms/SFVtnpLFQZyRRmKE3. Submit mitigation project ideas at https://goo.gl/XXDK0r.
