Unofficial results on the San Juan County elections website show the SJI School District No. 149 – Proposition No. 1 – Replacement Enrichment Levy has passed. There are 7,311 registered voters and 2,937 ballots were cast in the February 10 election. There were 2,198 votes cast for Yes (74.97%) and 734 votes cast for No (25.03%).
The voters pamphlet described the Educational Programs and Operations (EP&O) Levy as “the local property tax that supports our public school’s programs not funded by the state.” This levy replaces the current levy that expires in December of this year and the mill rate is the same as what voters approved in 2022.
“Our district is dependent on this local levy to continue with excellence in public education from preschool to 12th grade. The levy pays for over 17% of existing programs and is essential to maintaining quality instruction and programs that are necessary for a well-rounded, comprehensive education for our community’s children,” the argument for section of the voters pamphlet states.”This levy also supports counseling, nursing services, para-educators, office staff, transportation, food service, specialized teachers for art and music, classroom teachers necessary to maintain lower class sizes, and health and safety measures for our schools.”
