The San Juan Lions Club team defended their Knowledge Bowl crown Thursday at the San Juan Community Theatre.

It was a one-point victory that came down to the last question in the Jeopardy-format competition: “Port au Prince is located on which island in the Caribbean?”

The Lions finished first with 121 points, the 11th- and 12th-grade team placed second with 120. Rotarians were third with 100, Kiwanians were fourth with 96, the eighth-graders were fifth with 84. The Soroptimists bet big and finished with 38 (but they won first prize for best costumes).

The 17th annual Knowledge Bowl attracted a near-full house; it is sponsored by the San Juan Public Schools Foundation as a fund-raiser for public schools; tickets were $5 for adults, $3 for children. The Friday Harbor High School Jazz Band got the crowd warmed up before the festive competition began, and the Friday Harbor Middle School PTA sold bake-sale treats. There were several raffle items as well, including a trip for two on the Victoria Clipper.

The event was emceed by school board member Brent Snow.
