A discussion about moving on and moving forward with the Brickworks project will be the main course when the San Juan Island Agricultural Guild hosts a rally and homemade pizza party Aug. 29 at Sweet Earth Farm on San Juan Island.

The event begins at 4:30 p.m.

Those attending are encouraged to bring pizza toppings to share, a dessert and beverages. And bring a sweater or coat, depending on the weather.

While a wood-fired pizza oven heats up, members of the Agricultural Guild will discuss with supporters some ideas and next steps for moving ahead with the Brickworks project in the “post-Land Bank” era, according to Guild Co-Chairman Mark Madsen.

Backed by a proposed $400,000 investment by the Land Bank and a $375,000 state grant, the Ag Guild had planned to purchase a .34 acre lot and historic building in downtown Friday Harbor, located at 150 Nichols St., and remodel the building and the grounds into the home of a year-round farmers market and events center.

The Land Bank’s investment was scuttled Aug. 24 when two members of the County Council voted to reject deeds for the historical preservation and open-space easements the publicly-owned land conservation agency was prepared to buy as its part of a pending property purchase.

The rally and pizza party are free. Madsen said in a press release it’s an opportunity for the Guild to recognize those who have supported the Brickworks project.
