The San Juan Island Community Foundation presented $1,287,433 to PeaceHealth for the construction of Peace Island Medical Center and awarded $50,000 in grants to local non-profits at its 10th annual Breakfast of Champions, Friday at Mullis Community Senior Center.
The $1.2 million presented to PeaceHealth represents funds received so far out of more than $8 million pledged. Peace Island Medical Center is expected to cost $30 million; the San Juan Community Hospital Committee is raising through philanthropy one-third of the cost, PeaceHealth is paying the other two-thirds. San Juan County Public Hospital District No. 1, which will close Inter Island Medical Center when Peace Island opens but will continue to operate San Juan EMS, will contribute $1.2 million a year in property tax revenues for 50 years to subsidize medical care.
Another special award was presented Friday: A scholarship for San Juan EMS Chief James Cole for his advanced education in public safety administration.
Several non-profit representatives spoke at the awards ceremony, sharing their thanks and future plans for their organizations.

— Island Stage Left: 2,000 for free After-School Theatre Workshop.
— San Juan Community Theatre: $500 for “Mr. Dickens’ Is Coming” production and $1,500 for sound equipment upgrade.
— San Juan Island Museum of Art & Sculpture Park: $2,000 toward Art in the Schools program.
— San Juan Island Community Foundation’s Critical Needs Task Force Arts & Recreation Workgroup: $2,500 to create a new countywide Arts Council.
COMMUNITY
— Friday Harbor Veterans Museum: $1,000 for museum display upgrades.
— San Juan Historical Museum: $2,300 for San Juan Island Oral History Collection.
— San Juan Island 4-H: $1,500 for an LCD projector and Quiz Bowl game.
ENVIRONMENT
— Islands’ Oil Spill Association: $1,200 for computer and training.
— San Juan Nature Institute: $1,000 for a sea star model for school classes and $775 to support Young Naturalists in the Classroom.
— The Whale Museum: $4,160 for Donor Perfect software, to establish a permanent database for fund-raising and promotional activities.
— Wolf Hollow Wildlife Rehabilitation Center: $2,204 for oiled and stranded seabird rehabilitation.
HEALTH & WELLNESS
— Hospice of San Juan: $3,000 for Education/Volunteer Training.
— San Juan Island EMT Association: $5,000 for equipment and expanded training in support of cardiac arrest surveillance and survival initiatives.
— Senior Services Council of San Juan County: $3,500 for Friends and Neighbors In-Home Assistance.
BASIC NEEDS
— San Juan Island Family Resource Center: $2,000 for the “Read to Your Child 20 Minutes a Day” program.
EDUCATION
— Camp Invention: $800 for Camp Invention scholarships.
— Family Umbrella Group: $5,000 for pre-school scholarships.
— Friday Harbor High School: $2,500 for culinary school program.
— U.W. Friday Harbor Labs: $2,500 for science outreach program.
— Lighthouse Preschool: $500 for Enrichment Program 2010.
— San Juan Island Library District: $500 for “San Juan Island Reads” program.
— San Juan Island Parks and Recreation: $400 for specialized gymnastic equipment for use by Island Rec and the Friday Harbor Elementary School.
— Spring Street International School: $1,000 for the graphic arts production program.
— Stillpoint School: $1,200 for fifth- and sixth-grade computer lab.
