Price of ferry fares goes up 2.5 percent starting Saturday

Beginning Saturday, general fares will increase by 2.5 percent, a new fare category will be available for vehicles of less than 14 feet, a 25-cent per-ticket surcharge — dedicated to construction of new boats — will take effect, and bicycle permits, for sailings other than in the San Juans, will be eliminated.

New ferry fares will go into effect Saturday, Oct. 1.

In August, the Washington State Transportation Commission approved a series of changes to Washington State Ferries fares.

Beginning Saturday, general fares will increase by 2.5 percent, a new fare category will be available for vehicles of less than 14 feet, a 25-cent per-ticket surcharge — dedicated to construction of new boats — will take effect, and the use of bicycle permits will be eliminated; passengers paying with monthly passes, multi-ride cards, or an ORCA ePurse will be allowed to bring bicycles on board without additional charge.

In the San Juan Islands, only passengers using multi-ride cards would be exempt from the bicycle surcharge.
