Rep. Rick Larsen, D-Bellingham, was coasting Tuesday to a fifth term in the U.S. House of Representatives, District 2. At 8:10 p.m. Larsen was leading with 65,976 votes to Rick Bart’s 41,066, according to the Secretary of State’s office. Votes had been reported in Island and Snohomish counties. Elections officials were still awaiting results from King, San Juan, Skagit and Whatcom counties.
Libby Nieland of the Secretary of State’s office watched as San Juan County elections workers processed ballots in the tight quarters of the elections office. She was impressed.
Pat Speer’s life will be celebrated Saturday, 1 p.m., in Turnbull Gym at Friday Harbor High School. The event is open to the public. Her ashes will be interred at a later date in Nebraska.

Sixty-three percent of voters in San Juan County had turned in their ballots by Monday morning, and County Auditor Milene Henley expected the final turnout to be 90 percent. Tuesday is Election Day. The superintendent of the local educational service district will present the possibilities and pitfalls of consolidating the islands’ school districts Monday, noon, at Friday Harbor Presbyterian Church. The meeting is open to the public and will constitute a special meeting of the San Juan Island School Board. Lopez and Orcas school officials are expected to participate.

At about 3:15 p.m., Bill Henikman of Century Tel confirmed that repair crews had fixed the damage and telephone service on Orcas, Shaw and Lopez islands had been restored and is fully operational.

The San Juan Community Home Trust’s seventh annual Dessert Night and membership meeting is Nov. 3, 7 p.m. in the Skagit Valley College Community Room in Friday Harbor. An update on the Home Trust’s progress on a new neighborhood on the Buck/Boreen property will be given by emeritus board member Larry Soll.
