Rep. Rick Larsen meets with veterans today at 11:30 a.m. in the American Legion Hall. He is also scheduled to walk downtown with Sam Jacobson, a member of the San Juan Island Chamber of Commerce board of directors, and visit local businesses.
David Taylor of Guard Street found at least one sympathetic ear Thursday on the Town Council in his renewed quest to install a driveway on his property. Town law requires that homes on his block of Guard Street access their properties via Jensen Alley, to keep vehicles from backing onto Guard Street. But long before Taylor bought his home, his lot was subdivided and a home built behind his.

It has been a month now and I have searched each issue of The Journal for the expected reports of fireworks-caused forest fires, homes and barns burned down, human deaths or injuries from fireworks, even reports of animal injury. And what horror stories have I found? None! Nothing, nada, zero. Another safe and sane Fourth of July!

Monin is a captain and maintenance supervisor at the fire department. Hertel is a port commissioner.
The U.S. Coast Guard rescued two people from a grounded 30-foot recreational boat in the northern San Juan Islands, late Tuesday. At about 11 p.m. the Coast Guard Cutter Sea Lion, an 87-foot patrol boat homeported in Bellingham, was near Sucia Island State Park when the crew came across the 30-foot wooden boat, Gypsy, grounded on some rocks.
A house in the San Juans for less than $400,000? How about a house for less than $300,000? Or a quarter-acre town lot at around $100,000, a half-acre lot for $120,000, or a five-acre parcel for $175,000? Real estate prices have dropped, and the market is starting to chug along.
Following recent reports to the Legislature that minority students continue to lag behind in school and 2009 WASL results confirming the gap isn’t shrinking quickly enough, a new Achievement Gap and Oversight Committee will take on the challenge of improving academic achievement for every child in our state.
State Rep. Dave Quall, D-Mount Vernon, was gaveled at the Washington Association of School Administrators summer conference in July, but unlike being gaveled on the floor of the House, this was something to celebrate.
First, the good news: Friday Harbor merchants and innkeepers are doing better. Now, the tough news: They are doing better than 2004. The latest sales and hotel-motel tax figures from the Town of Friday Harbor shows receipts lagging behind 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008. In only one month, April, did we almost do as well as last year.
