Frogs, squirrels, unicorns, orcas, a T-Rex and a bald eagle dressed in red, white and blue were amongst the over 1,000 No Kings attendees on Oct. 18 in Friday Harbor.
The rally was one of several hosted by Indivisible San Juan Islands, and was part of a national protest that drew seven million people across the country. Rain clearly did not dampen the spirits of the crowd. Participation was one of the highest, consisting of every age group, and some brought their dogs.
With music in the background, the scene appeared jovial. People driving by also seemed to be generally supportive, honking and waving while protesters held American flags and signs saying “No Kings” and “Hands off,” things related to health care, veterans services, civil rights and free speech. The T-Rex carried a sign that read “No Kings since 65,000 BC,” while the squirrels’ pink banner read “Resist.”
Islanders gathered for approximately an hour before marching down Second Street, up Spring Street and back to the courthouse.
