New midwifery services in Friday Harbor

Submitted by Greenbank Birth Center

With the closing this year of Island Life Midwifery, the midwives at the Greenbank Birth Center decided, after 27 years of providing full-scope midwifery care to San Juan Islands families from our satellite office in Anacortes, it was time for us to take the boat.

We found a beautiful space on San Juan Island and have been seeing clients there since Sept. 1. We are located at 25 Nichols St. in Friday Harbor, a short walk from the ferry terminal.

The Greenbank Birth Center is one of the most established free-standing birth centers in Washington state. Licensed in 1992, we began serving San Juan County families the following year. Since then, we have worked with over 600 families and have a pretty good idea of how this “Destination Birth” concept works.

The Greenbank Birth Center is located on Whidbey Island. Our beautiful facility is set in five acres of woods and is 15 minutes from local hospital services, should the need arise. The birth center is a large, stand-alone building, which provides complete privacy during your birth. We have a large birthing tub and nitrous oxide for pain relief if requested.

Whidbey Island has many options for families if they choose to come over prior to birth. There are many short-term rentals available year-round and some camping facilities. We are located center-island, so easily accessible to both ends of the island.

We offer a no-cost, no-pressure meet-and-greet in both our Friday Harbor and Greenbank offices. So, come explore your choices and see if the Greenbank Birth Center is the right place for your community birth.
