What’s new at the San Juan Island Library?

Well, there’s Marjorie Harrison, for starters.

And if you have not yet met her, mark Thursday on your calendar.

Harrison, who joined the library as its newest director in September, will be the marquee attraction at a public reception Thursday, 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., at the library.

Fresh from Heartland U.S.A., Harrison, the former coordinator of the Panhandle Library System of Western Nebraska, was selected by the Board of Trustees to lead the library following the resignation of Laura Tretter, who accepted a job at a public library in Durango, Colo., and on the heels of a nationwide search that drew 30 candidates.

In announcing its decision in September, Board President Lynn Weber-Roochvarg said of Harrison, “She had excellent qualifications and experience. She has a strong public service orientation, and she’s worked in rural settings … She has a personality that fits the island and we think she will do really well with our public here.”

Harrison began her tenure at the top in early November. She manages a budget of roughly $1.1 million, and will earn $71,000 a year.
