Meet-and-greet to welcome San Juan’s newest paramedic, Travis Potter, today at 4:30 p.m.

The powers that be at San Juan Island EMS will be on hand to introduce Travis Potter to the public as part of an hour-long "meet and greet" Wednesday, beginning at 4:30 p.m., at the Frank Wilson EMS Building in Friday Harbor.

They’re pulling out the welcome wagon for San Juan Island’s newest paramedic.

The powers that be at San Juan Island EMS will be on hand to introduce Travis Potter to the public as part of an hour-long “meet and greet” Wednesday, beginning at 4:30 p.m., at the Frank Wilson EMS Building in Friday Harbor.

Potter, 24, joined the EMS team at the beginning of the year. When he’s not bandaging wounds or saving lives, Potter enjoys camping, skiing and playing the bagpipes.

“His wilderness background in the ski patrol, as well as experience with the U.S. Forest Service, will help him to be effective in our remote island setting,” EMS Chief Jim Cole said.

Potter was selected for the position following a nationwide search and from a field of more than 30 candidates who sought the job.

Potter, a nationally registered paramedic, earned an associate’s degree in paramedicine from Lane Community College in Eugene, and has completed various undergraduate coursework in business at the University of Idaho.

On the heels of the meet and greet, Potter will be sworn in later in the evening as part of the regular meeting of the board of commissioners of San Juan County Public Hospital District No. 1. The commission’s meeting is slated to begin at 5:30 p.m. at the Frank Wilson EMS Building.

As part of Wednesday’s meeting, the commission is expected to appoint a replacement for former commissioner Randi Dooley-Park, who stepped down from the commission late last year. Though Dooley Park’s term was slated to end in 2013, the position will be on the ballot as part of November’s general election.

Hospital district commissioners serve six-year terms and receive $104 a meeting. Commission meetings are open to the public.
