Let your idea be the spark of a student project

If you have an idea or two that could benefit the community, then Friday Harbor High would like to hear from you. You can pitch ideas to the Community Service Class starting Friday, Aug. 31, with a 15-minute presentation at the high school, from 1 p.m. to 1:55 p.m.; class time has been reserved for presentations on Tuesday, Sept. 4, and Wednesday, Sept. 5, as well.

A vegetable garden. A greenhouse. An upgrade of a trail on Mitchell Hill. Fundraising to buy rolling water carriers for a needy African community.

These are just a few examples of improvement projects that the students of Friday Harbor High School’s Community Service Class have undertaken in recent years.

And with the start of the school year, they’re looking for more.

The class unites students with adult mentors who then help guide projects from start to finish, offering a “win-win” partnership for students and local organizations, according to the high school’s Jenny Wilson, community service class instructor.
