Islanders become Indivisible

Never afraid to speak their mind, over 100 islanders stood in front of the courthouse at noon, Tuesday, March 12. Rain did not deter them from protesting against the new Department of Government Efficiency, many of President Trump’s executive orders and other moves by the administration.

“I’m worried about women and girls, the environment, the economy and the state of this country,” one protestor said.

Cars honked as they drove by, waving in what appeared to be support.

The protest was part of a nationwide protest organized by “Indivisible,” which, according to the website, is part of a grassroots movement “of thousands of local Indivisible groups with a mission to elect progressive leaders, rebuild our democracy, and defeat the Trump agenda. The organization encourages local chapters and local action, saying, “Local Indivisible groups build and wield power in ways that individuals can’t. To create change, you need the collective constituent power that comes with working together, as Indivisibles.”

“Our democracy is under threat. But we will not yield to fascism. We will stand together and we’ll fight back in defense of our rights, our communities, and our values,” the website states.

“I’m here because I feel like we are losing our country and the free world. It’s sad. It’s very shameful and sad,” another attendee, Jane Forth, said.

After approximately half hour at the courthouse, most of the local protesters marched through town, via second street as well.

Indivisible is calling for a “Hands Off” day of action on Aprit 5, encouraging citizens to “take to the streets nationwide to fight back with a clear message: Hands off!”
