Helping the islands’ disabled over come isolation

The San Juan County United Way has been instrumental in assisting folks who experience a developmental disability. They have awarded Washington Vocational Services a grant for the last three years, supporting WVS to plan activities which help these men and women experience less isolation in the San Juans.

Under the umbrella of United Way, our group named themselves “The United Wayfarers.” We have been sharing activities and enjoying connecting with local residents, tourists and one another. So far this year we have had opportunities to meet and research different events offered around San Juan County.

On Lopez, we tie dyed new United Wayfarer tee shirts. The library offered conference room space for us to sponsor a “Trash to Treasure” Art and Play workshop with Francie Hanson, with plans to enter our creations in the San Juan County Fair.

A completely new experience this year will be working with Katerina Wan and Stephanie Prima from Move Into Mindfulness to help us eliminate stress and giving us tools for more flexibility. In August, we will enjoy the Roche Harbor sculpture park. We will also visit Moran State Park for paddle boat rides and geocaching.

This fall and early winter, we have a variety of United Wayfarer activities and hope the community will share with us. Look for invitational flyers on public bulletin boards around town. Please join us in our fun activities. Contact Cara Cohn at 376-1014, Sharon Hooper at 298-8033.
