“Green: ON THE EDGE,” a visual arts mixed media exhibit, opens Fourth of July weekend and continues until Sept. 12 at IMA, on First Street in Friday Harbor.

A mix of artists from Washington and Oregon entered the competition to be juried by three top contemporary art jurors: Eric Metcalfe, Vancouver, B.C. artist; Marisa Sanchez, curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Seattle Art Museum; and Tom Toperzer, a career museum director.

The results are a collection of works by artists who have expressed what “green” means to them — everything from environmental statements, recycling taken to new and comic heights, futuristic worlds, nature in the abstract and stunning visual truths. Descriptions by the artists of their works in the show takes the visitor on a fascinating journey through “Green.”

Fifteen of the 27 artists accepted into the exhibition were from the San Juan Islands: 12 from San Juan, and one each from Lopez, Orcas and Waldron. Other areas represented are Anacortes, Mount Vernon, Port Townsend, Seattle and Eugene, Ore.

Two of the three Juror Awards were given to San Juan Island artists: Laura Bauer and Ann Walbert. Their work, along with the work of Sandra McMorris Johnson, a fiber/textile artist and photographer, from Eugene, Ore., is featured on the IMA postcard and poster created for the show. A booklet about the exhibit is available for sale at the museum. It contains a biography and photo of each of the 27 artists, along with their thoughts about their art.

Art Days start July 3
San Juan Islands Museum of Art and Sculpture Park has a day and evening of activities planned at the sculpture park at Roche Harbor.

Seventeen new sculptures have been installed at the sculpture park.

Here’s the event schedule:

— 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.: Family Art Days class, led by Francie Hansen and Kevin Roth. Learn how to turn reused and recycled items into creative explosions of art.

— 5 p.m. to sunset: Bring a picnic, participate in the costume contest and sculpture hunt, listen to live music by Critical Mass (Grant and Devon Schwinge and Peter Duggins). Costume contest theme is “I’m a sculpture park.” Entry fee: $5.

— Sunset: Roche Harbor’s “Taps” ceremony, then “Release a Wish” led by artist Chris Moench.
