Friday Harbor High School and the community said good bye and congratulations to the 54 students who made up the graduating class of 2016 on June 11.

“I don’t know where I’m going, but I’m on my way,” a quote by Carl Sagan, the class motto, hung above the graduates, as they waited for their diplomas.

The ceremony began with a welcome by ASB president Samantha Finch. Then students Jess Hargrove and Jesse Kolowitz spoke on “The History.” As is tradition they called the names of students who joined the school district as kindergartners. Then they moved through each grade calling out each student and when they attended the school.

Next students received scholarship and awards. Many of those awards were presented by Friday Harbor Alumni, including Desi Whalen, a recent graduate, who gave the Crystal Sea’s Kayaking scholarship.

Saludatorian Fiona Sutherland, and Co-Valedictorians Echo Wood and Alexis Galt also spoke. Sutherland will be attending Gonzaga University in the fall, Alexis Galt, University of Washington, and Echo Wood the University of Washington, where she will be pursuing a bachelors in engineering. The crowd cheered as the Hannah Hopkins, Alexa Mora and Cady Wilson presented the slide show, a compilation of each graduates baby photo, as well as a current photo.

By next fall, this class will join the decades of graduates with their picture on the high schools wall, along with the parents and grandparents of many of them, who are also memorialized.
