Friday Harbor’s marine science team, aka the Orca Bowlers, have done it again. 

Seniors Nick Roberts and Nicole LeBaron, junior Audrey Olshefsky and sophomore Gavin Guard soared through the competition, dispatching 12 consecutive opponents to claim the Orca Bowl trophy for the second straight year.

As team alternate, senior Elle Guard stood close by and waited in the wings should duty call. 

A total of 16 teams from across the state competed at this year’s annual Washington State Ocean Science Bowl, hosted Saturday on the campus of the University of Washington. 

Friday Harbor’s Orca Bowl team defeated North Seattle’s Ocean Research College Academy, a magnate school of 85 students, took take clinch the 2011 title in the championship round. 

“It was pretty impressive,” coach Nick Frazee, a psychics teacher at Friday Harbor High, said of the team’s dominant performance. 

Next stop for the two-time state champs? 

It’s a trip to Galveston, Texas, to take part in the national marine science competition. The Friday Harbor squad will be among 26 teams competing for the national title as part of a three-day tournament in the Lone Star state. The national meet begins April 28.
