Deadline for applications was Friday; the term ends Dec. 31, 2009.

Candidates are Anna Maria de Freitas, Bob Low, Noel Monin and Dan Zaehring.

De Freitas is a cookbook author and co-owner of Harrison House Suites and Tucker House B&B. She is also a member of the board of directors of the San Juan Islands Visitors Bureau.

Low is a former town fire chief. He is county fire marshal and an elected member of the San Juan Hospital District Commission.

Monin is a San Juan Island Fire Department lieutenant. He is one of five full-time employees at the department and is in charge of the maintenance division.

Zaehring is an accountant and, with his wife Andrea, owns Account/Ability Resources, Inc., which works with small-business owners to make their finances function smoothly to serve their goals and objectives, both in business and personally.

The council position was vacated by Kelley Balcomb-Bartok, who resigned effective June 6 to take a communications position at the City of Renton.

Council members are paid $85 per meeting for up to four meetings per month.

The Town Council is a legislative body. Council members adopt resolutions and ordinances, approve changes in zoning, make policy and approve the budget.

The Town Council is expected to interview applicants by July 17 and appoint someone to the vacancy by Aug. 7.
