DOE: Unocal cleanup site still shines

The initial cleanup in 2002 removed 3,710 tons of polluted soil and 6,000 gallons of polluted groundwater.

The five-year review of the Unocal Bulk Fuels Plant cleanup site at the Port of Friday Harbor has been completed with no continuing public health or environmental effects noted by the state Department of Ecology.

The initial cleanup in 2002 removed 3,710 tons of polluted soil and 6,000 gallons of polluted groundwater.

A “no further action” determination was issued in 2003 after the town agreed to a restrictive covenant protecting the site, and a second “no further action” determination lifting groundwater compliance monitoring was issued in 2006.

The 2012 review was a second five-year review to assure that the restrictive covenant has not been violated.
