Daniel Scott Drahn, 55, passed away on August 12, 2016 in Kona, HI. His generous heart failed him while on an eagerly anticipated night scuba dive. Dan was a devoted father and husband who was known by many for his creative and adventurous spirit. Dan’s willingness and imagination led not only his own family on many memorable adventures but also delighted other children and families along the way.
Dan was born on February 15th, 1961 in Boulder City, Nevada to Richard and Gloria Drahn.
He grew up in California, Idaho, Alaska and Washington. Dan graduated from Capitol High School in Olympia in 1979 and then went on to earn a Civil Engineering degree from Seattle University in1982.
Dan began doing voluntary service work while in college and continued this for the rest of his life. He first worked in Kenya while in college and after graduating joined the Peace Corps, serving in Thailand, from 1984-1986. It was in Thailand that he met his future wife, Terri, who was also a Peace Corps volunteer.
Dan and Terri were married in 1990 and moved to Seattle and then Lopez Island in 1993. It was here where Dan became a devoted father to three children while working hard in his engineering career. He began work with MPD Engineering and Survey in 1993. In 2008 he became the owner, changing the the company name to Boundary Water. Dan was a well respected civil engineer in San Juan County and an active community member volunteering his engineering skills for FLIP, San Juan County Stormwater Advisory Committee and Lopez Village Planning Committee. He was also a devoted mentor through the Lopez Island Family Resource Center.
Dan loved to use his skills to help those in need which took him to Sri Lanka following the Tsunami in 2004, and refugee camps in Myanmar in 2013. For several years he joined the Lopez Community church group working on housing in Tijuana, an experience he shared with two of his children.
Dan is survived by his wife, Terri of Lopez Island, Wa; his three children, Nate, Miriam and Anah Kate; his brothers, Hank Drahn of Hesperia, CA, David Drahn of Kona HI and Jonathan of Petaluma, CA; and his mother Gloria Drahn.
Dan will always be remembered for his kindness and quirky, creative sense of humor leaving laughter and joy in his wake. While his creative adventures will long be remembered by those invited along, he will also be remembered for deeply delving into life’s questions and encouraging others to do the same. Dan was an active spiritual seeker and made deep connections with all faith communities on Lopez.
A Memorial Celebration of Dan’s life will take place outdoors at the Drahn residence on 108 Heffalump Lane, Sunday, September 18th at 3:30 pm.
