A one-ton Public Works Department truck rolled into the water at Roche Harbor between 10 and 11 a.m., Oct. 3.

No one was inside the truck at the time and there are no reported injuries.

The truck was parked on a ramp in the area of impending construction on a new dock, when it was bumped by a large piece of driftwood loaded onto its bed.

“Something in the truck went ‘clunk’ and it rolled forward into the water,” Harvey said.

The truck was completely submerged for approximately two hours before hauled out by a contract tow operator.

Public Works and Roche Harbor employees stood by to monitor leaking fuel or oil leaked out, but acting Public Works Director Russ Harvey said there was no leakage.

A pleasure boat near the ramp suffered superficial damage.

The truck, described as one of the older vehicles in the county fleet, is now in the county shop and the maintenance crew is looking over its mechanical system to discover what caused it to start rolling.
