Community Treasures appoints new board president

By Dwight Ware

Community Treasures president

(Editor’s note: San Juan County officials will review land-use designations in the county’s comprehensive plan update by June 2018. This could change the land-use designation for the Community Treasures property, which Frank Penwell, the former president of the board, said he has requested since 2008.)

The Community Treasures board met on May 5. Frank Penwell stepped down from his position as president of the board and Dwight Ware, the former vice-president, assumed the position as the new president.

Community Treasures will continue to:

• Seek new board members.

• Maintain a month-to-month lease arrangement until late 2018, while Community Treasures and the community await results of the San Juan County Comprehensive Plan update.

• E-recycle printers, radios and computers. All San Juan Island TVs computers, and monitors are being handled at the county dump on Sutton Road.

• Recycle cardboard, clothes, batteries, wire, steel, aluminum, paper, and reuse items.

• Pick-up and clean-up services for garage, moving and estate sales.

• Participate in charitable giving, as well as nonprofit and service organizations’ free-item access programs.

• Provide nonprofit needs grant and educational support programs.

• Have a San Juan County Fair booth.

• Participate in the Love and Logic workshop.

Community Treasures officials wish to thank the San Juan Island community for its past 13-plus years of support. Community Treasures is continuing its support of “boots on the ground” conservation/recycling community reuse and educational needs.
