A story of how walking leads to registering to vote

When Amanda Brast turned 18 she asked Nancy Wight, as a representative of the League of Women Voters, to register her as a voter in San Juan County.

When Cyndi Brast and her daughter, Amanda, moved to the island in the fall of 2009, they only knew a few people. They decided to join the Friday Walkers, who take walks anywhere from Oracs Island, to Stuart Island, to Yellow Island.

“It was a wonderful way to be introduced to residents,” said Cyndi Brast. “We met so many people and my daughter got a whole set of grandparents.”

Her daughter made a special connection with Nancy Wight, who used to be the leader of the Friday Walkers.

When Amanda Brast turned 18 she asked Wight, as a representative of the League of Women Voters, to register her as a voter in San Juan County.

“It was a special honor for Amanda,” said Cynd Brast. “Nancy is a wonderful mentor and a very treasured friend.”
