The Fourth of July activities has something for everyone

This year, the are the traditional events, revised events and brand new ways to celebrate the Fourth of July. Below are a few options:

4th of July Pancake Breakfast

Grange from 7-10 a.m.

All You Can Eat Pancake Breakfast to support the Scouts of San Juan Islands! $10 per person. Children under 11 eat at half price. No more than three sausages per person.

Fire Cracker Race: 5K (3.1 miles) Family and Friends Fun-Run

San Juan Suites, 8 a.m.

The race starts at 8 a.m. at the Friday Harbor Suites. Register onsite or print and bring completed multi or single waiver, between 7-7:45 a.m. Run, walk, skip or stroll. Leashed dogs are welcome. Entry fee is $10 for those 16 and over or $5 for those under 16. Under 6 is free. Organized by San Juan Athletics, sponsored by Friday Harbor Suites and Kings Market.

Fourth of July Parade: “Home Town Heroes”

10:30 a.m. (ferry dependent) on Spring Street.

This parade has been rated one of the top 10 small-town Fourth of July celebrations in the U.S.A. The parade will start at approximately 10:30 a.m. (depending on the summer ferry schedule) on Friday, July 4.

Legion Lunch and Hot Dogs

After the parade, at approximately 11:30 a.m., at the American Legion parking lot.

Pig War Picnic

After the parade at the Fairgrounds, at 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The Port and Kiwanis are combining efforts, merging Rock the Dock with the Pig War Picnic. The Port is generously providing a shuttle from the Marina to the Fairgrounds. Kiwanis is excited to introduce a new and expanded venue highlighting two popular island bands, The Dangerfields and the Henry Rose Band. Kiwanis is also expanding the Beer and Wine Garden seating area so that guests can better view and listen to the musical entertainers.

There will be a greater variety of diverse culinary food items, desserts and beverage options to choose from. The popular “Bite of San Juan” offers guests to sample of local favorites like Chepe’s Tamales, authentic street tacos, corn on the cob and lemonade, as well as Fiesta Express’s hot dogs, asada fries and street corn. Green Beat Kitchen will serve pulled pork sandwiches, noodle bowls with tofu and mac and cheese. Fernanda Garcia will serve Aqua Fresca, Friday Harbor Lions Club will be making their famous grilled Kielbasa sandwiches, Friday Harbor Tigers Athletic Association will serve burgers and hot dogs and Nature’s Nuts are selling their yummy, candied nuts. Felicitations will feature her famous and delectable Tres Leches Cakes, eclairs and strawberry shortcake. Stella’s Brew will provide the best specialty coffees, JP’s Restaurant and Bar will prepare homemade pizza, Critical Thinking School will serve loaded baked potatoes and Rolling Sushi will be serving a variety of sushi treats. All the food vendors will be serving at the Food Court.

And, of course, Island Rec will be back featuring their “pig-tacular” family-oriented activities like three-legged races, gunny sack competitions, egg tossing, pennies in the hay search and a watermelon eating contest.

Tractor show

11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Historical Museum.

Celebrate the island’s agricultural history and take a look at the San Juan Historical Museum’s tractor collection, seeing firsthand how tractors evolved through time. Tractors were important to the agricultural economy of San Juan Island and many brands and types of tractors were used. The tractors on display had productive lives and others continue working hard to this day.

Art Walk

4-7 p.m. at various venues around town.

Every first Friday of the month local galleries and shops will stay open late for an Art Walk! Look out for the window decals and the list of participating venues on their Facebook page.

Band Randy Hansen and Special Guests

Brickworks Tokitae stage from 6-10 p.m. Rock out right up to the Fireworks! BBQ, Beer and Wine Garden on site.

Fireworks

10:30 p.m. – or dusk -in Friday Harbor. Find a good viewpoint of the harbor to watch the annual fireworks display out over the water.
