SJICF launches campaign to support community resiliency

In response to growing needs and uncertainty across our island community, the San Juan Island Community Foundation has renamed its Emergency Response Fund to the San Juan Island Resiliency Fund, a vital resource created to provide rapid, flexible funding for programs serving San Juan Island residents facing a crisis.

First established at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the fund provides a simple vehicle for the community to respond swiftly to emergency needs.

To date, SJICF has granted more than $275,000 from the Resiliency Fund. Nearly 60% of those grants were to the Joyce L. Sobel Family Resource Center. This includes $50,000 in funding for emergency rental assistance, helping neighbors remain housed during times of financial hardship and changes to their living situation.

Now, as many continue to face economic, housing and other uncertainties, SJICF is inviting the community to come together once again to help San Juan Islanders facing a crisis.

If you’re a concerned resident who wants to help but is uncertain about how, here’s a guide to some actions you can take that will have the most impact:

Give to the SJI Resiliency Fund

Your donation of any amount provides critical emergency aid to those who need it most. Visit sjicf.org/donate to give. Every dollar goes directly toward urgent needs in our community through programs delivered by trusted nonprofit organizations like the Joyce L. Sobel Family Resource Center, among others.

Attend training to learn how to help

Learn how to be part of an effective community response by signing up for training opportunities focused on practical ways to assist neighbors in crisis. More information about available sessions will be shared by SJICF in the coming weeks at sjicf.org.

Volunteer your time

Make a difference by volunteering with community programs that serve our most vulnerable islanders. Local organizations like the Joyce L. Sobel Family Resource Center and the Mullis Community Senior Center connect volunteers with real, on-the-ground opportunities to serve island neighbors.

Spread the word

Help reach more hearts by sharing this campaign with your friends, family and networks. Raising awareness is a powerful act of care!

“Our island is strong because our community genuinely cares for one another and bounces back during tough times,” said Amy Saxe-Eyler, CEO of SJICF. “Helping each other is part of who we are, especially in a crisis. SJICF supports local nonprofits by giving grants, offering training, and creating ways for people to connect. We also share important information about what’s needed and how others can help. Whether you donate money or time, your support helps make sure no one faces hard times alone, now or in the future.”

Stay tuned for more updates in the weeks ahead, including details about grant funding, training sessions and volunteer opportunities. For more information or to make a charitable gift to the SJI Resiliency Fund, visit sjicf.org or call 360-378-1001.
