Seaweed aquaculture explored during ‘Send Kelp’

Submitted by San Juan Island Grange.

Thursday, Jan.15 at 5 p.m., the Grange will screen “Send Kelp,” a documentary by Canadian filmmaker Blake McWilliam as part of their Third Thursday lecture series. Preceding the film, Kristy Bredin, owner of “Mermaid Botanicals,” will discuss nutritional and medicinal benefits of seaweed issues affecting both wild and cultivated seaweed ecosystems and sustainable harvesting practices. There will be seaweed tasting during intermission.

“Send Kelp” spotlights kelp farming on Vancouver Island, Canada, featuring stunning cinematography and a distinctive film score that incorporates the natural sounds of kelp. The film offers an engaging look at regenerative ocean farming and its potential role in sustainable food systems. Seaweed is a highly nutrient-dense local food that delivers essential minerals and micronutrients. As a fast-growing crop that absorbs carbon dioxide and can improve local water quality by reducing ocean acidification, seaweed farming is increasingly recognized as a promising component of climate adaptation strategies.

This event is free and open to the public.
