Seaweed aquaculture explored during ‘Send Kelp’

Submitted by San Juan Islands PREPARE.

Thursday, Jan.15 at 5 p.m., the Grange will screen “Send Kelp,” a documentary by Waldron filmmaker Blake McWilliam to discuss nutritional and medicinal benefits of seaweed issues affecting both wild and cultivated seaweed ecosystems and sustainable harvesting practices. There will be seaweed tasting during intermission.

“Send Kelp” spotlights kelp farming on Vancouver Island, Canada, featuring stunning cinematography and a distinctive film score that incorporates the natural sounds of kelp. The film offers an engaging look at regenerative ocean farming and its potential role in sustainable food systems. Seaweed is a highly nutrient-dense local food that delivers essential minerals and micronutrients. As a fast-growing crop that absorbs carbon dioxide and can improve local water quality by reducing ocean acidification, seaweed farming is increasingly recognized as a promising component of climate adaptation strategies.

This event is free and open to the public.
