Lions Shopping Spree provided $920 for the food bank

The Winner of the 2023 San Juan Lions Annual Shopping Spree was Thalia Shorett of San Juan Island, who chose to donate her winnings and “Shopping Run” to the Friday Harbor Food Bank.

Nov. 21, at 1 p.m., the spree began and Food Bank Director Rachelle Radonski ran for Shorrett. In four minutes Radonski filled up a half dozen carts worth of food for island families in need. The price tag came to $920.16.

“This community is so generous,” Lion President Kim Galton said. “It really warms my heart.”

Second and third place prizes were a 12-14 pound turkey. Second place went to Craig Green, of San Juan Island, and the third-place went to Jean Griffin, of San Juan Island, who donated her prize to Friday Harbor Food Bank.

Ticket Sales and donations to the San Juan Lions Shopping Spree exceeded $4,300 this year. One hundred percent of the funds raised (minus the cost of Shopping Spree Run) goes directly to the Local Scholarship Fund.

The San Juan Island Lions Club has provided the Annual Shopping Spree since 1990 with the cooperation of Kings Market, Market Place and Valmark.

The food bank can always use donations, especially this time of year. Some of the items currently on their list are chicken broth, proteins like canned tuna or chicken and other meats. Financial donations are always helpful as well. “Feel free to call and ask as needs change weekly,” Radonski said.
