Island Haven Animal Sanctuary announces Summer Horse Powered Reading ® Program

Submitted by Island Haven Animal Sanctuary.

This summer Island Haven Animal Sanctuary is excited to offer Horse Powered Reading®, a unique program integrating social-emotional learning with academics, and, of course, horses!

Horse Powered Reading®, created by Dr. Michele Pickel, focuses on the learning process for the individual and builds upon children’s natural curiosity and determination. During sessions, students are allowed to make discoveries and experiment with knowledge firsthand. Reading skills such as Decoding, Vocabulary, Fluency, and Comprehension are addressed with the assistance of their horse “book”.

There will be two, 4-week long summer programs, brought to you in part by a grant from San Juan Island Community Foundation. Sessions take place at the sanctuary on Tuesdays or Fridays and are one on one with the student, their chosen horse “book” and a certified facilitator. The first program begins June 20th and the second begins July 25th.

Established in 2015, Island Haven Animal Sanctuary’s mission is to provide lifetime care for equines and farmed animals who, while still able to lead a quality life, are unable to find homes due to disabilities or chronic or age-related illnesses.
