Three Bachelors of Broadway will be singing their hearts out at the San Juan Community Theatre on June 28, at 7:30 p.m. The group consists of active Broadway performers, however, the trio coming to the islands are Christopher C. Minor, Mikey Wessells and Josh Woodie. They formed over a decade ago, as Ron DeStephano and a few of his cohorts sensed a shift.
“We were moving into our mid-30s and realized we were no longer cute young things,” DeStephano explained. Wanting to create a show that was fresh, vibrant and unique, they put together “Two on Tap.” That show, according to DeStephano, was wildly successful, more than they could have imagined. With all their contacts and talent, they created more shows, each with active Broadway entertainers.
The pandemic occurred, shutting live shows down. It also left people looking for a fun, fresh take on Broadway, and the Bachelors were ready and waiting. In 2023, the trio concept, featuring a three-part harmony, was launched, blending contemporary and classic numbers.
When asked if he had a favorite song, DeStephano responded, “’Give my regards to Broadway.’ We have reinvented it with a pop-infused arrangement, and blended it with ‘What I Did for Love.’ The result is a contemporary sound and emotional tribute to Broadway that audiences love. While selections for the performance on June 28 are subject to change, it will feature lush symphonic arrangements of songs from modern and classic musicals like “Wicked,” “The Phantom of the Opera,” “Jersey Boys,” “42nd Street,” “Miss Saigon,” “The Greatest Showman,” “Dear Evan Hansen,” “Les Misérables” and much more.
Minor’s bio includes working professionally as an actor in live theater, film and as a voiceover artist since 2007. He has deep love for musical theater and a passion for bringing new works to life, creating characters nobody has explored before. Based in NYC since 2016, life has been a constant adventure that he cannot wait to continue. A few of his favorite roles have been Tom Collins (“Rent”), Tommy (“Brigadoon”), Rapunzel’s Prince (“Into the Woods”) and Bellomy (“The Fantasticks”). When asked what the draw to musicals is, DeStephano thought a moment before saying, “People love theatre, and desperately want to feel. These stories need to be told.”
Musicals exist, DeStephano continued, because “Singing allows for conveying powerful emotions. When talking doesn’t work, you start singing.”
