Author Talk with San Juan Island’s own Susan Vernon

Submitted by Griffin Bay Bookstore.

Join us at Griffin Bay Bookstore where local author Susan Vernon will talk, read and offer a slide presentation based on her book “Sitting Still With Twilight Owls” on Tuesday, June 3 at 7 p.m. in the bookstore café.

The author of the classic book about San Juan Island, “Rainshadow World,” looks deeply – and personally – into the unnoticed lives of the wildlife that hold the web of life together in the stunning biological diversity of San Juan Island, Washington. From twilight owls (short-eared owls) to blue butterflies, ancient dragons and subterranean moths, these lives unfold against a backdrop of endangered prairies, evergreen forests and coastal wetlands.

Vernon will show us slides of some of her favorite places and talk about how sometimes just sitting still for a few minutes in a peaceful island setting and pondering the natural world can produce extraordinary moments of beauty, awe and connectedness to this wild realm and to one another.

A brief discussion and questions and answers will follow the presentation. Copies of Vernon’s books “Rainshadow World” and “Sitting Still With Twilight Owls” will be on sale, and Vernon will be happy to dedicate individual copies.
