The Animal Protection Society – Friday Harbor joins Greater Good Charities to transport more than 125 (final shelter pet count will be taken at the airport) shelter dogs and cats from Southern California to the Pacific Northwest, giving them a better chance at adoption and easing pressure on local animal welfare organizations. The flight, supported by The Animal Rescue Site, creates urgently needed space in the participating shelters, giving them breathing room to care for the rising number of shelter pets following this year’s devastating wildfire.
APS-FH may be a small shelter, but our community’s compassion for animals is boundless. We proudly partner with local and national shelters, rescues and transport organizations to save as many cat and dog lives as our capacity allows. We’re honored to join Greater Good Charities in their rescue efforts following the devastating Los Angeles wildfires and are excited to welcome four displaced dogs through this transport mission — each one now on the path to a safe, loving forever home.
Greater Good Charities was one of the first international response organizations on the ground when the Greater Los Angeles wildfires began. This flight is part of the global nonprofit’s long-term commitment to supporting communities affected by the disaster. To date, Greater Good Charities is estimated to have helped more than 20,000 people and 55,000 pets, delivering over $8 million in aid, including nearly five million meals for pets.
“This flight for relocating shelter pets to areas where there is a need for adoptable pets is a direct request from our trusted Los Angeles partner in the aftermath of the wildfires earlier this year,” said SáraVarsa, executive vice president for Greater Good Charities. “Local and surrounding area shelters are still feeling the impact of the disaster, including a significant increase in pet surrenders by families, which further strains the resources of the facilities.
“The animal welfare organizations sending the pets on this flight include the Los Angeles County Department of Animal Care and Control and Orange County Animal Care. The shelter pets will be received by The Animal Protection Society-Friday Harbor, Embrace a Discarded Animal Society, The NOAH Center, and PAWS in Washington, and Oregon Humane Society, and CAT Adoption Team in Oregon. This is the third shelter pet flight conducted by Greater Good Charities to support communities affected by the wildfires and to transport hundreds of homeless pets to new homes.
