Vote yes for library | Letter

We’re writing in support of the library bond on the November 8th ballot. The library is a critical “third space” for San Juan islanders – a space between home and work/school to connect, learn, find support, and have fun!

Our library is open six days a week and serves all islanders, with no cost of admission. Even when our lives were disrupted by the pandemic, the library was a lifeline for so many with loanable Wi-Fi hotspots, reliable Wi-Fi in the library parking lot, curbside pickup of materials, and outreach to homebound islanders. This is what libraries do for communities. Their mission is to understand and anticipate the specific needs of local families and individuals and then deliver materials, programs, and services tailored to serve them.

The current site is simply too small to accommodate the growth in demand for our library’s offerings. The aging building is expensive to maintain. The indoor and outdoor space gained at the 660 Spring Street location will transform the way the library serves us. It’s an investment in our community that will generate endless benefits now and far into the future.

We urge you to vote “yes” on the bond measure on November 8th.
