Vote for the future of San Juan County law enforcement | Letter

As a resident of this island community for over 13 years, I know how limited we are in recruiting and retaining experienced personnel capable of occupying the positions which are mission-critical to our island community. On November 8th, we will have an opportunity to elect an individual who possesses the experience and character needed to tackle the law enforcement issues plaguing our county today as well as the new threats we are seeing. The decision of who we elect as our Sheriff must not be an emotional one. This position is too critical to be decided on that criterion. Crime is evolving, and we need a person who has the experience and temperament to evolve as well. We now are in the position of selecting an individual who is fully qualified and capable of ushering in a new brand of law enforcement for our county, who has the ability of mixing both small-town policing and big-city police knowledge to protect our islands from criminal elements. I commend our current sheriff for his 8 years of service, I can only imagine how difficult it has been occupying a position in which he basically had to learn through trial and error, I truly appreciate your service to the citizens of this county, But now we have an individual who processes over 27 years of the skills, training and REAL-LIFE experience needed to not only combat the island threats of today but also the threats of tomorrow.

I do not see this as a replacement, in my view I consider it an” UPGRADE.” Why settle for a new car with standard features when I can get a deluxe model car for the same price. It’s time as a community that we select individuals in positions of leadership and authority that are forward-thinking, personally relatable and experienced. In other words ..Your decision should be based on which candidate gives me the most bang for my buck!. For that reason, I ask the residents of San Juan County join with me in endorsing Sgt Eric Peter for Sheriff. The one man capable of ushering in a new level of effective Law enforcement for the future of San Juan County.

Ray Jackson- MAYOR
