There’s a Good Samaritan on San Juan Island

As a resident of Lopez Island, I wish to share a little story about a Good Samaritan on San Juan Island. My son and wife were visiting from New Wilmington, Pa., and wanted to visit San Juan Island and to stay in a B&B, and with bikes they could explore the island. Upon meeting a family on the ferry, they were told about a great ride out Roche Harbor way.

My son and wife were visiting from New Wilmington, Pa., and wanted to visit San Juan Island and to stay in a B&B, and with bikes they could explore the island. Upon meeting a family on the ferry, they were told about a great ride out Roche Harbor way.

They checked in at the B&B and headed out for a little ride to Roche — people seem to tell them it was just a little ride, a few miles etc., but without water, they headed out in mid-afternoon and found riding conditions not friendly.

A stop at a flea market place to get water was a lucky encounter. There they met a fellow named Luis, who informed them that it was too late in the day to continue on and he offered to disassemble the front tires and put the bikes in his truck and drive them back to town. Thank you, Luis, for your kindness.

A shuttle trip the next day showed the visitors what a disaster was avoided by this helpful man.
