For both supporters and critics of the Proposition 1 Real Estate ExciseTax, as funding for the Land Bank, the question of the 12-year renewal seems to be an issue of contention.

So, why wouldn’t a shorter reauthorization cycle be sufficient?

At the risk of adding my thoughts to the cacophony, I believe the lengthy period is necessary because it allows the Land Bank to maintain its mission and vision for the long term, allows property owners flexibility in their sale or easement decisions, and provides sustainability on current preservation and restoration projects.

These are vital necessities to the future health and welfare of our island and ourselves.

I urge you to vote “Yes” on Prop. 1
