Nothing ‘elitist’ about change at Good Voyage Chapel | Letters

Many St. Francis parishioners received an email, which was thought to represent the entire parish and administration, but it did not; it reflected the desires of some members of the Tarte family, who want the chapel to remain a consecrated space for Catholic worship during the summer season.

To Journal readers:

There was miscommunication involved in the situation concerning the future of Our Lady of Good Voyage Chapel at the Roche Harbor Resort.

Many St. Francis parishioners received an email a few days ago, which was thought to represent the entire parish and administration, but it did not; it reflected the desires of some members of the Tarte family, who want the chapel to remain a consecrated space for Catholic worship during the summer season.

When the resort was sold to non-Catholics, St. Francis parishioners realized it was likely there would be discussion concerning what the best use of the chapel might be, and in fact there is ongoing discussion at this time among the Archdiocese of Seattle, the Tarte family, and the resort.

There is certainly no “elitist” mentality involved here. The worship services at the chapel have always welcomed anyone who wants to join us, and in fact thousands of visitors over the years have done so.

Please notice that St. Francis Parish is not involved in the official discussions; there is no doubt a variety of feelings and opinions among our parishioners concerning whatever changes may be forthcoming.
