Island Rec sailing classes got off to a windy start last week. Using boats generously provided by the Sailing Foundation, two classes of aspiring sailors came to Percich Pond to test the waters.
San Juan Island Schools Superintendent Michael Soltman reported that $17,600 has been raised toward a goal of $23,000 needed to fully restore the athletic program for next year.

The 133-foot schooner Adventuress ran aground in Wasp Passage Monday, forcing the evacuation of 27 passengers and crewmembers.
A year of special events will begin at the San Juan County Fair, Aug. 16-19, and will conclude at the 2009 San Juan County Fair.
Events include a community photograph Sept. 20 on the San Juan County Courthouse lawn (all residents can assemble there to be included in the photo); and a town-sponsored birthday party Feb. 9, 3-6 p.m., at the San Juan County Fairgrounds.
The Waldron Community Meeting will host a forum July 12, 2-4 p.m., for candidates for County Council, District 4; and Superior Court judge.
Westcott Bay Sea Farms is being downsized to a clam operation with periodic harvest of mussels and oysters. Its surrounding acreage is for sale.

Engine is “showing its age,” said Fire Chief Vern Long. Engine 6 has had brake problems, a leaking water tank, and now pump problems. “We’re just trying to nurse (Engine 6) through it … It just couldn’t wait till spring.”
