The U.W. Friday Harbor Labs’ 10th annual Illg Distinguished Lecturer will be Dr. James Carlton, professor of marine sciences at Williams College and director of the Maritime Studies Program of Williams College and Mystic Seaport.
Ninety-five friends and family members gathered June 14 afternoon in the Friday Harbor Middle School commons to celebrate the graduation of nine seniors from Griffin Bay High School.
Restoration began today on one of Washington’s oldest county jails.
Dana Owens restored the cupola of the 1895 San Juan County Jail, located on the grounds of the San Juan Historical Museum. Bailer Hill Construction and Local Islands Roofing are doing the main roof. The entire roof of the old jail, which houses public exhibits related its history, is expected to be completed in time for the Fourth of July Pig War Picnic on the museum grounds.

James Leon Desermeaux, former San Juan County assessor and 42-year resident of Friday Harbor, has died. Mr. Desermeaux died at home on June 18. He was 75. Graveside service is Thursday, 1 p.m., at Valley Cemetery.
