Most everyone also agrees that annexing more land for affordable housing shouldn’t be a burden to existing town residents, many of whom would qualify for affordable housing. This would put these people into a less affordable situation.
Proponents of crumb rubber will point to industry funded studies showing the presence of known carcinogens and respiratory irritants at levels below legal thresholds. These studies look at only a small handful of samples and don’t consider the most troubling class of chemicals: Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons.
This week, islanders will receive in the mail a brochure that explains where every dollar goes that is given to United Way of San Juan County. Each dollar goes to 35 local non-profit agencies that provide services for island children and families.
Dennis Hazelton, 65, is retiring as Friday Harbor port director for U.S. Customs and Border Protection Service. A retirement salute is planned Saturday, 4 p.m., in American Legion Post 163 downstairs. The event is open to the public.
Jawaad Darcelle Reaves, 21, was charged with second-degree murder Tuesday in the death of his brother, Jermaine. Reaves was transferred from San Juan County Jail to Island County Jail. He is being held on $100,000 bail. Arraignment is scheduled here Oct. 10, 9 a.m. His attorney is Bill Jaquette of the Snohomish County Public Defender’s Office.
At 1:45 p.m., only 45 minutes after bidding began, the gavel came down and Rosario Resort was sold at auction for $5.45 million, plus the buyers’ fee. Laurie Cameron, executive director of the seller, Olympus Real Estate Partners, would not divulge the buyer’s name, but did say that the successful bidder is from the area, though not the islands, and loves Rosario.

Please take a few minutes, old and young, kids or no kids, to walk by and/or play in the new elementary school playground. The school board recently voted on a discussion item to keep crumb rubber. I believe this is a community issue and not merely a school board decision because we all pay taxes and we also generously donate to the many organizations that support public schools.
