While the San Juan Islands have been closed to fishing during the winter months for 10 years or more, it is now reopen for hatchery chinook salmon. Due to negotiations with the state, San Juan Island fishing has been expanded from the Strait of Juan de Fuca and Puget Sound.
The Spring Series, the beginning of the Friday Harbor Sailing Club’s racing year, opened this last weekend with a two-day event better suited to power boats.
The San Juan County Public Works Department has violated state law by allowing contaminated water at the Sutton Road waste transfer station to come into contact with groundwater, according to an administrative order hand-delivered to Public Works Director Jon Shannon by the state Department of Ecology. The county is also in violation for not having an Industrial Stormwater General Permit from Ecology.
The National Marine Fisheries Service today proposed to list three populations of rockfish in Puget Sound and the Strait of Georgia for protection under the Endangered Species Act. A final decision on the three will be made a year from now.

The San Juan Island solid waste transfer station, one of the most contentious issues on the island today, may help bring peace between the town and county governments. If the county vacates the Sutton Road site for another location, the town could conceivably operate its own waste transfer station. But the state Department of Ecology and the town and county’s joint planning policy discourage the operation of two waste transfer stations on the island. So, the town and county are drafting letters of intent, pledging to work toward a single solution to the island’s solid waste woes. This is a major diplomatic move and we applaud it.
The number of drinking and driving crashes is on the rise in San Juan County. According to San Juan County court records, 44 DUI cases were cases filed in 2004. That number climbed to 61 in 2007 and 94 in 2008. Nineteen DUI cases were filed in the first quarter of 2009. A program hopes to turn the tide by reinforcing images of the consequences of driving while intoxicated.

The Friday Harbor Elementary School PTA is putting the “fun” back in fund-raising with a new twist on an old idea. Six island dads will compete for the title of Mr. San Juan Island Saturday in Roche Harbor Pavilion. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.; the show begins at 7 p.m.
